Volunteering
Volunteer with us!
Do you dream of walking in the footsteps of explorers? Imagine the roar of a working mill?
Do you have practical skills, enjoy talking to people, love history, or simply want to learn?
Our charity was founded in 1985 by a small band of dedicated local volunteers.
Today, volunteering remains at the heart of our work to spark curiosity in heritage!
As a volunteer, you can:
- Learn about museums, our collections, and world heritage
- Gain new skills and experience
- Make friends and meet people from around the world
- Access exclusive events and training for volunteers

FAQs
Who can apply?
Anyone! We welcome applications from people from all walks of life and with different abilities. We will do our best to find you a role that suits you internally or signpost you to other volunteering opportunities.
What happens after I apply?
We’ll invite you to meet us at the site(s) you want to volunteer for an informal induction. This will help you get an idea of what the role is like and how we work as a team. After the visit, we’ll ask you to fill in a couple of more forms.
How much time do I have to give as a volunteer?
The amount of time is different for each opportunity and will be discussed prior to you starting your role. Please check the role description and send us a message if you’re unsure.
What if I change my mind about volunteering?
We understand that things can change quickly in your personal and professional life. If you change your mind about volunteering with us, please let us know.
Are there certain qualifications, skills, or previous experience I need?
No. We provide an induction, full training and ongoing support for each role. If you have expertise in an area, please let us know.
You will always be supervised if the role involves working with young people.
Will I get my expenses paid?
Yes, we will pay for transport to and from volunteering monthly, as well as any (pre-approved) out-of-pocket expenses.
What about insurance?
You are covered by our employee liability insurance while onsite or engaged in any work on behalf of Dundee Heritage Trust.
Will volunteering affect my benefits?
You can volunteer for as many hours as you like as long you continue to meet the conditions of the benefit you get. Find out more here.
