An exhibition celebrating the work of Charles G.L. Phillips

After coming to Dundee to study art in 1879, Charles G.L. Phillips went on to produce art for renowned Dundee firms like Valentines Postcards and The Courier.

A talented and prolific artist, he worked in oil, watercolour, and etchings – the latter being his speciality. This mesmerising exhibition showcases a selection of his finest works depicting Dundee and beyond, from the Dundee Heritage Trust Collections.

Etchings show familiar Dundee landmarks such as Morgan Academy, Dundee University, and the High School of Dundee, whilst paintings bring splashes of colour to scenes from the streets of 19th century Dundee.

Charles Goustav Louis Phillips was born of Scottish parentage in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1863. His father was a sea captain trading there, before the family soon returned home to Aberdeenshire. Following an injury and leg amputation that put a seafaring career in the footsteps of his to bed, Phillips came to Dundee; a move that would spark the beginning of his artistic career.
