Support Structure Installed

The urgent works to the Royal Research Ship Discovery are well underway, with all hands on deck to work to conserve this incredible ship and her legacy.

The newest addition to the quayside comes in the form of a bright yellow scaffold; placed at the stern of RRS Discovery to act as a support structure whilst this area is conserved. This major conservation project has been funded by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.

The steel structure will stay in place during the work to the stern; enabling a permanent support, to ensure continued support and strength in RRS Discovery’s overhanging stern for years to come. Wood within this area can now be repaired safely and in a structurally-sound way.

The installation of the steel support system has utilised the historic wells (or trunks) that house the rudder and propeller. RRS Discovery’s historic rudder is currently on display on our quayside, for visitors to see in unprecedented detail, having been lifted earlier this summer. It too will be conserved before being re-installed following the conservation works.

This fascinating work once again allows our visitors an exciting opportunity to get up close and explore the major conservation work being undertaken! The Royal Research Ship Discovery remains open as usual whilst the work progresses, with visitors urged to come and witness history in motion, as Scottish engineers use traditional methods and materials to conserve this incredible Dundee-built ship; just metres from where RRS Discovery was originally constructed back in 1901.

As custodians of the RRS Discovery and two Recognised Collections of National Significance, Dundee Heritage Trust are an independent charity. With less than 2% of their income being publicly funded, the remaining 98% is generated by the charity; through museum admission; fundraising; and hospitality. As the major works on RRS Discovery progress, the charity continue to fundraise to support the cost of the everyday care of this extraordinary Polar vessel.
