We’re currently redeveloping our colonial India Gallery at Verdant Works Museum, in order to better represent the connections between Dundee and the Indian sub-continent and to share more voices and stories.

We’d love to hear your story and record an oral history

Or, are you from India, Bangladesh or Pakistan and came to Dundee specifically to learn about the Jute Trade?

Do you have objects (such as photos, leaflets, books, clothing, recipes, diaries, letters and certificates) that are linked to the Jute Industry that you would be willing to loan or donate?

 

Volunteer

You can get involved in the redevelopment of our India Gallery by volunteering to undertake research. We have many topics from you to choose from, including:

  • Jute Industry pre–East India Company (pre-1793) 
  • Jute Industry during East India Company (1793-1858) 
  • Establishment of large mills in India (specifically Kolkata) 
  • Growth in Indian industry (1850-1947) 
  • Adaptation of Dundee Industries  
  • Partition and independence (1947) 
  • Machinery being sold and run in India and East Pakistan  
  • Adaptation of Dundee industries to competition 
  • Revival of Jute in India 
  • Legacy in India
