Who are Dundee Heritage Trust?
Dundee Heritage Trust was established in 1985 by a small dedicated group of local people concerned that if action wasn’t taken, aspects of our city’s heritage would be lost forever.
As Dundee reeled from the loss of its key industries, the early Trust set out a hopeful vision to return the Royal Research Ship Discovery to its home city to be preserved for the benefit of the public.
In 1986, the return of the ship sparked a cultural renaissance in Dundee, and by 1996 the Trust was responsible for not one but two museums sharing the city’s extraordinary story.
Today, our museums may have changed—but our mission remains: to protect and share Dundee’s unique local and global heritage for the benefit of current and future generations.
Our Impact
Since 1985, we have been making a difference for Dundee’s heritage—and its future! Your support helps us to preserve and share our heritage for the benefit of our community and visitors from across the globe.
From the skills of Dundee’s jute workers to shipwrighting aboard the RRS Discovery, we strive to preserve not just the fabric of our heritage, but the skills to protect it for the future.
Each year, we welcome tens of thousands of people to our museums, sparking curiosity in our city and supporting a thriving heritage, culture, and tourism ecosystem for Dundee.
From our wee explorers under 5 years old to our volunteers aged 18 to 80, our community has been at the heart of our museums for 40 years.
Thanks to your support, we currently assist 1 in 3 young learners to visit us at the point of need through our widening access scheme for disadvantaged schools and communities.

Like many intrepid associations before us, Dundee Heritage Trust has depended on charitable donations since its founding, with just 2% of our annual income funded by the local authority.
Now, in light of vital conservation works needed aboard the RRS Discovery and ongoing efforts to transform our museums over the next 3 years, more than ever, we need your support to help us protect and share our heritage for the next generation, for Dundee and for the world.
