Dive into the UK’s Maritime Heritage
Visitors to Dundee invited to dive into stories from the UK’s maritime heritage spanning 23,000 years aboard the Discovery Bus; an interactive travelling exhibition on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd August 2024.
As part of Unpath’d Waters’ touring exhibition this summer, the Maritime Archaeology Trust’s Discovery Bus will welcome visitors aboard to explore the past and future of Britain’s maritime heritage on 2nd and 3rd August 2024 at Discovery Point in Dundee, home of the Royal Research Ship Discovery. The Discovery Bus will be open during museum opening hours, and is included in museum admission or existing Discovery Point annual pass. No prior booking is required.

The interactive bus’ visit to Discovery Point comes as part of a wider tour across the UK, which will include a visit to the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine. It is hoped that visitors of all ages from Tayside and beyond will take the opportunity to visit the extraordinary Discovery Bus during its time in Dundee, to hear from scientists, try out VR headsets, and more.
With the growing importance of the heritage associated with the country’s maritime collections, the Unpath’d Waters project – through its Discovery Bus and interactive elements such as Navigator, Doggerland Simulator and the Needles Voyager – increases interaction and engagement with such heritage by bringing it to the public in accessible ways.
Unpath’d Waters is being conducted over the course of three years with thanks to funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council through their Towards a National Collection programme, that aims to unite the UK’s maritime collections. The theme of connecting Britain’s maritime heritage ties in with Discovery Point’s recent involvement in the University of Southampton’s Tales of Discovery project, through which a state-of-the-art digital twin of Captain Scott’s 1901 ship Discovery was created.

Unpathd Waters is a ground-breaking 3-year research project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council through their Towards a National Collection programme, that aims to unite the UK’s maritime collections. The UK has a rich maritime heritage, stretching back over 23,000 years. It’s impossible to tell the story of our islands without talking about our relationship with the sea. This maritime past is becoming increasingly important. People are more aware of our exploitation of the sea and topics such as colonialism, slavery and immigration. Unpath’d Waters therefore aims to increase interaction with the UK’s maritime heritage by making it easier to research and easier for the public to discover and share stories in new ways.
