A History of the High Mill

The High Mill is the oldest part of the Verdant Works Museum.  In this blog, we look at the history of the cathedral-esque space at the heart of Verdant Works Museum.

Constructed in 1833, the High Mill was originally built for David Lindsay, a prominent merchant and flax spinner of his time. Lindsay’s vision was to create a state-of-the-art mill complex that would leverage the industrial revolution’s advancements in machinery and production techniques.

At its peak, the High Mill of Verdant Works was a bustling hub of activity, hosting hundreds of mill workers and an array of intricate machines. The hum of machinery filled the air, contributing to the vibrant and industrious atmosphere of the time. The High Mill at Verdant Works was not just a building; it was a cornerstone of the local economy and a testament to the industrial prowess of 19th-century Dundee.

The High Mill’s significance continued to grow as additional buildings were constructed around it. By 1863, Verdant Works had expanded to include warehouses, batching areas (or, ‘batchin hooses’), and offices, each playing a crucial role in the mill’s operations. These additions made the High Mill a comprehensive industrial space, facilitating everything from the initial processing of raw flax to the storage and distribution of finished products.

Despite its early success, Verdant Works faced challenges as the textile industry evolved. The rise of new technologies and shifting economic conditions led to changes in the mill’s operations. When Verdant Works opened as a museum in 1996, the High Mill was closed off to the public.

In 2014, a significant turning point came for the High Mill, as an extensive renovation project was undertaken to restore the building to its former glory, with thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

This ambitious project aimed to preserve the historical integrity of the High Mill while adapting it for modern use. The renovation included structural repairs, the installation of new facilities, and the restoration of historical features.

One of the highlights of the renovation was the installation of a restored Boulton and Watt beam engine from 1801, that had been used in Dundee. This remarkable piece of engineering history was loaned to the museum by Dundee City Council through a partnership with Leisure and Culture Dundee. The beam engine serves as a tangible link to the past, showcasing the ingenuity and craftsmanship of early industrial machinery. Learn about how we care for the Boulton & Watt engine in the video below.

In 2015, the High Mill reopened to the public, marking a new chapter in its storied history. The reopening of the space doubled the size of Verdant Works Museum. The High Mill is now a beautiful, versatile space used for a wide variety of purposes, from weddings and conferences to concerts and exhibitions. The International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGOPTY) Exhibition 17 is on display this summer in the peaceful High Mill, alongside the special ‘Dundee’s Heritage and Nature’ photography exhibition.

The most recent addition to the fabric of the High Mill is that of infra-red heating, made possible by a successful Dundee Climate Fund bid in 2023, which was decided by a public vote. We extend our gratitude to the public for their support in this endeavour, as it has significantly enhanced the comfort and sustainability of the High Mill.
